The 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2018 campaign, dropping a 6-3 decision to the ninth-ranked University of Chicago at the Cleveland Racquet Club on Saturday evening.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 1-1 on the season, while Chicago raised its record to 5-0 on the year with the victory.
Chicago grabbed the early lead in the match, with Majorie Antohi and Claire Handa picking up a 9-8 (7-4) victory over senior Nithya Kanagasegar and freshman Madeleine Paolucci at first doubles, followed by an 8-1 victory at third doubles for Alyssa Rudin and Estefania Navarro over junior Jessica Liu and Katrin Gurvich. At second doubles, senior Peyton Young and freshman Nicole Cardwell were able to pick up a key point for the Spartans, winning 9-7 over Catherine Xu and Laura Gutierrez to make it a 2-1 score heading into singles play.
In singles action, senior Nina Cepeda earned a 6-2, 3-6, 10-3 win over Alyssa Rudin in the fifth contest, and Young claimed a straight-set win, 6-3, 6-4, over Daryn Ellison in the sixth match. However, the Spartans would drop the each of the remaining singles matches, allowing the Maroons to earn the 6-3 victory.
Case Western Reserve will be back action tomorrow morning, when the team hosts Denision University at 8:00 a.m. at the Cleveland Skating Club.
