2017 Women’s Soccer Team Praised by United Soccer Coaches for Work in the Classroom

Kansas City, MO — The WPI women’s soccer program received the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 academic year.
Steph Riley-Schafer’s squad tied Utah State, Mississippi State and Marquette for 44th with a 3.61 GPA. The Crimson and Gray were also third in the NEWMAC and fifth among NCAA Division III teams in New England.
A total of 783 collegiate soccer teams (294 men, 489 women) posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Of that total, 198 schools had both their men’s and women’s programs recognized including WPI.
The team paced all WPI fall teams with a record 13 NEWMAC Academic All-Conference nods. Seniors Cierra Ford (Georgia, VT), Karina Larson (Storrs, CT) and Lizzie Rooney (Harvard, MA) represented women’s soccer all three years while classmates Mari Bailey (North Providence, RI) and Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH) made the list for the first time. Junior Hannah Modelski (Hollis, NH) earned the honor in both years she has been eligible, as did sophomores Jill Comeau (North Reading, MA), Georgie Cromwell (Mukilteo, WA), Becca Hapgood (Halifax, MA), Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA), Megan Olson (Brookline, NH), Kirsten Southan (Owings, MD) and Mandy St. Germain (Upton, MA) in their first. McCrea also represented the Engineers on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
