Wellesley, MA — Senior Madison Beck (Syracuse, NY) drained a 3-pointer with 26.9 seconds to go and classmate Maura Buckley (Melrose, MA) shined for the defense as WPI edged Wellesley 44-42 Wednesday night in a NEWMAC Women’s Basketball showdown.
The Engineers (13-4, 6-2 NEWMAC) get back in the win column while the Blue slip to 4-10 and 2-6.
Trailing 42-39, senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) netted a layup with just under a minute to play. Following a steal by senior Stasha Greenalch (Newington, CT), the Engineers took a timeout once they were over the time line. After the breather, Beck canned her triple. The Engineers committed a foul sending Wellesley to the charity stripe where they came up empty. Following a tie-up that gave the ball to the Blue, Buckley swatted away a pair of game-tying attempts and preserved the two point margin as time expired.
Freshman Maddie Blake (Bedford, NH) guided the Engineers with eight points as Beck and Greenalch each scored seven. Buckley collected a game-best 11 rebounds and finished with a game-high four blocks. Greenalch added four assists as Buckley and Biney doled out three apiece.
Junior Emily Kopp (King Ferry, NY) posted a game-high 11 points and a team-best six rebounds to go with eight points from senior Kayla Jang (South Pasadena, CA), who also accounted for a quartet of steals. Senior Chelsea Brown (San Jose, CA) chipped in with a trio of swipes.
Wellesley, who committed 13 fewer turnovers, scored 17 of the 22 points as a result. The Blue also scored nine of 11 second chance points and both fastbreak points. WPI enjoyed a 20-12 margin in the paint and 20-8 off the bench.
The Boynton Hillers welcome Wheaton Saturday for a 2pm contest while Wellesley treks to Smith at the same time.
