Bennett Wins 100th as Men’s Swimming & Diving Sweeps Wheaton and UMass Dartmouth

Norton, MA — The 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay bookended a WPI sweep of UMass Dartmouth and host Wheaton in men’s swimming & diving action Wednesday night in Balfour Natatorium. The wins were head coach Paul Bennett’s 100th and 101st men’s victories. The Engineers topped the Lyons 178-65 and the Corsairs 191-50.
Junior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), sophomore Dave Chen (Niantic, CT), freshman Tucker Besch (West Sand Lake, NY) and graduate student Erick Burgwardt (Honeoye Falls, NY) collaborated to hand in a winning time of 1:35.70 in the 200 while junior Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), sophomore Jehu De la Rosa (The Woodlands, TX), senior Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) and freshman Tim McDonald (Walpole, MA) delivered a 3:16.23 to take the 400.
Individually, Bauer struck gold in the 50-yard freestyle (21.81) and 100-yard backstroke (50.53), Chen touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.04), Besch was second in the 100-yard butterfly (55.23), and Burgwardt won the 100-yard freestyle (48.74). McDonald ended up third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.71). Senior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) earned career-best and top scores of 284.50 on the 3-meter diving board and 296.65 on the 1-meter board.
Sophomore Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) swept the distance freestyles with times of 4:54.24 in the 500 and 10:11.93 in the 1,000. Junior Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) secured the 200-yard IM (1:59.06).
The Engineers head to Clark Wednesday for another 6:30pm start.
