El Pasoan and former congressmen, Beto O’Rourke is running for president.O’Rourke made the announcement early Thursday morning on his official Twitter account announcing his candidacy.
“I want to be president because I feel that we can bring this country together,” O’Rourke said to the El Paso Times. “We can unify around our ambitions, our aspirations, the big things that we know we are capable of when all of us have the opportunity to contribute.”
Wednesday afternoon O’Rourke confirmed it to local TV station KTSM via text message that said he would seek the Democratic nomination for president.
O’Rourke pondered about the presidential run after his narrow defeat in the Texas Senate race in November against Republican Ted Cruz.
The announcement makes O’Rourke the second Texan to enter the race for the Democratic party. O’Rourke becomes the first prominent El Paso politician to seek the nation’s highest office. Currently, the Democratic party has more than a dozen nominations.
In a recently published article by Vanity Fair O’Rourke said “You can probably tell that I want to run. I do. I think I’d be good at it.”
The article highlights the difficulties and struggles O’Rourke faced in his decision making for a spot in the 2020 presidential race.
O”Rourke will have a kickoff event March 30 in El Paso, further information about the event will be announced in the coming days.
