Cal Poly Pomona Broncos

POMONA — Trailing by 19 points midway through the third period, the Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team rallied to come within two points with just four seconds remaining in the contest, but that’s as close as it would get in a 74-70 loss to No. 16 Azusa Pacific on Saturday evening at Kellogg Arena in Pomona. The Broncos (1-1) earned a split on the weekend while the Cougars begin their season unblemished at 2-0.Rebecca Islas scored 22 of her game-high 29 points in the final 15 minutes of the game.  She finished going 10 for 14 from the floor, including 3 for 6 from three-point range, while grabbing five rebounds.  Kasey Smit tallied 16 points and seven boards and Jordyn Shane chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds before fouling out late.It was close through the first 19 minutes of the night, but Azusa Pacific would go on a 16-4 run in a six-minute span between the end of the second quarter and midway through the third to seemingly put the game out of reach, but the Broncos clawed back to come within two points, capped by an Islas three ball with four ticks on the clock, but a pair of APU free throws at the other end would seal the deal.CPP connected on 38.7 percent from the hardwood on 24 of 62 shots, but were just 18.8 percent (3 of 16) from long range.  Meanwhile, the nationally-ranked Cougars hit on 48.2 percent of their shots (27 of 56).  The Broncos did outrebound the Cougars 41-35, including a 17-6 edge on the offensive glass.Azusa was led by the 19 points from Savanna Hanson and 14 from Cierra Roufosse.Cal Poly Pomona will return to action next Saturday at home against Tarleton State.  Start time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.Print Friendly Version
