Santa Barbara, Calif. – With the rest of the Gauchos enjoying their time off from competing, freshman Chase Tarr will still be firing on all cylinders this week at the USATF Junior National Championships in Bloomington, Indiana hosted by Indiana University. Chase will be set to compete in the javelin on Friday at 3:30 pm PST where he will be looking to garner a top two finish in order to qualify for the IAAF Under 20 Championships taking place in mid-July in Tampere, Finland.
The young Gaucho has showcased remarkable displays in the javelin in his short time here at UC Santa Barbara, having qualified for the NCAA West Regional Meet last month and having thrown 60 plus meters in his college career. In Bloomington he will face a 12-man field including some of the best junior (those under 20 years of age) athletes the US has to offer, a field which Assistant Coach Robert Marlow believes could bring the best out of Chase on the day.
“Chase is a competitor…whenever and wherever he is, Chase is ready to throw down. Junior Nationals is another opportunity for him to compete against high level competition. Although the competition is limited to the junior level, the marks [in the javelin] are exceptionally high. I’m excited to see how he rounds out this season.”
As mentioned above, qualifying for the IAAF U20 Championships in Finland will require a top two finish at the Junior Outdoor Championships on the day. Chase will also need to look for a throw that meets the IAAF qualifying standard of 68.70m (225′ 5″) during the championships since his current personal best throw of 64.29m (210′ 11″) does not meet the standard. It will be a tall order for the freshman, but coming from a career starting throw of 55.01m (180′ 6″) back in February, the sky’s the limit for now …
