College of Law to host events for Violence Awareness Week

This February, DePaul’s Schiller DuCanto and Fleck Family Law Center will host a number of events aimed at raising awareness of relationship violence. All members of the university community are invited to take part in the week’s programming.
Violence Awareness Week – Toiletry DriveMonday, Feb. 12 – Friday, Feb. 16
Donate unused toiletries to the women and children at the Rosenthal Domestic Violence Shelter. Items can be dropped off on the third floor of the Lewis Building’s Career Services Center.
Lunch and learn – Love Shouldn’t HurtMonday, Feb. 1211:40 a.m. – 12:50 p.m.Lewis Building, room 242
Hear Kathleen A. Doherty, the Executive Director of the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network, speak on the important topic of domestic violence and its impacts on future clients, family, or friends who have experienced it.  A free lunch will be provided.
Self-defense classTuesday, Feb. 132 – 3:30 p.m.Loop Campus DePaul Center, concourse levelRSVP required to Katie Liss
Take a study break and enroll in a free self-defense class. This class is limited to the first 20 people who sign up. Please wear athletic clothes and gym shoes.
Violence Awareness Week Distinguished Lecture Series – Changing the Culture to End Gender Based ViolenceThursday, Feb. 1511:30 a.m. – check in12 p.m. – program begins25 E. Jackson Blvd., room 341RSVP
Lynn Rosenthal, the former White House advisor on violence against women, is the spring 2018 Distinguished Lecture Series keynote speaker. Rosenthal will discuss the history of the movement to end violence against women, the #MeToo trend, the role of the Violence Against Women Act, and new emerging cultural issues. Lunch will be provided.
Prior to serving in her role as the White House advisor, Rosenthal served as the executive director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence, representing state domestic violence coalitions in Congress and working closely with corporate leaders to develop funding initiatives addressing violence against women.
