Inside MC Online

The MC Ultrasonics, a team of first and second-year students from Montgomery College, became the first-ever champions of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) Inter-collegial SonoBowl, held last week at Howard Community College. The competition featured Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) students from two and four-year colleges and universities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. The Montgomery College DMS students who competed are all in their first or second years of the program. “We were pretty nervous to be against soon-to-be graduates from the other DMS schools, but even though we were the underdogs, we were ready to compete,” said Kristy Le, the team leader and a second-year DMS student at the College. “MC Ultrasonics had a blast at SonoBowl and we are blessed to utilize all the learning and skills MC DMS Program has given us… We were able to use it in a fun, creative way before we get started in our careers in ultrasound!” The team members were Le, Lisa Chase, Paige Reddan, and Cristal Virreira. Diagnostic medical sonography is a multi-specialty profession comprised of abdominal sonography, cardiac sonography, obstetrics/gynecology sonography, vascular sonography, and other clinical areas. These diverse areas all use ultrasound as a primary technology in their daily work. The contest consisted of three rounds of questions and scanning. Going into the third round, University of Maryland-Baltimore County and Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences sat tied for first place with 74 points. MC was in third (66 points) followed by host Howard with 58. All four teams wagered full point totals on one final case study. The MC Ultrasonics outscored the competition and celebrated the first-ever championship of inter-collegial competition. In 2017, the College’s DMS program was ranked sixth in the nation for “Best Associate’s in Medical Sonography” by College Choice, see the ranking here. Linda Zanin, Ed.
