ter, was appointed Chairman of the Department of Surgery, effective immediately, announced Dr. Richard N. Fine, Dean of the School of Medicine. He had been interim Chair of the department since August 2008.With 40 faculty members and nearly 50 physicians in training including residents and fellows, the Department of Surgery comprises the Divisions of Breast Surgery; Cardiothoracic Surgery; Colon and Rectal Surgery; General Surgery, Trauma, Burns and Critical Care; Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (ENT); Pediatric Surgery; Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; Upper Gastrointestinal and General Oncologic Surgery; and, Vascular Surgery. “Dr. Rosengart is a Tenured Professor who is a highly skilled technical surgeon, a program leader, a scientist and a clinician who has published extensively and is actively involved in teaching residents and medical students,” said Dr. Fine. “He has proven himself as an effective leader and is the ideal person to fill the role of Chairman of his department.”The Department of Surgery at Stony Brook is an active participant in several national quality initiatives, including the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, a national surgical quality improvement program of the American College of Surgeons, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s nationwide Sprint for the Surgical Safety Checklist developed by a team of clinical experts at the World Health Organization.A nationally recognized leader in cardiac surgery, Dr. Rosengart joined Stony Brook University in January 2006 from Northwestern University’s School of Medicine in Chicago, where he was professor of surgery and chief of cardiothoracic surgery at its affiliated hospitals of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare.
