Anyone looking to expand their computer knowledge for personal or professional reasons can earn two certifications through Lone Star College-Kingwoods Continuing Education program.
Computer Support Technician certifications are available for CompTIA A+ and Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP). The next class for CompTIA A+ is Nov. 1- Feb. 16. The class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-10 p.m. Classes on both programs will be available in spring 2012.
Certifications are the focus of the future job market in IT. Technological information doubles every two years, said Ken Hodgkinson, adjunct professor.  Degrees, while nice, cant keep up with the change in the knowledge base.
The CompTia A+ certification validates foundation-level knowledge and skills necessary for a career in PC support. It is the starting point for a career. The international, vendor-neutral certification proves competence in areas such as installation, preventative maintenance, networking, security and troubleshooting. To earn, students must complete the class and pass two exams.
With a MCITP certification, individuals can prove that they have the comprehensive set of skills necessary to perform a particular job role such as database administrator or enterprise messaging administrator. This certification builds on the technical proficiency measured in the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certifications. Therefore, prior individuals earning their MCITP certification, they will earn one or more MCTS certifications.
Prior to taking classes to become certified, students should have a good working knowledge of operating a computer, Hodgkinson said. In addition to flourishing IT careers, these certifications will strengthen anyones resume. Businesses need people who are technically savvy.
The cost for each program is $475 plus tax and $150 per certification test. According to Hodgkinson, it takes only one semester class to prepare students to take the test and become certified.
