Eastern Michigan Treks to Columbus for OSU Winter Invitational

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men’s swimming and diving team sets its sights on the Ohio State University Winter Invitational this weekend, Feb. 10-11. There, a select group of Eagles will compete in the two-day event, taking on swimmers from some of the top programs in the country, including host, No. 16 Ohio State, and No. 22 Notre Dame. The Eagles are coming off a dominating, 154-123, win over Albion College, Feb. 2, to celebrate the careers of their five seniors. En route to the victory, EMU won 15-of-16 events, while senior Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford) and sophomores Matthew Tsenkov (Sofia, Bulgaria-General Vladimir Stoychev)  and Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon) all recorded a pair of individual wins. Johnson and Tsenkov turned in season-best times to sweep the butterfly and breastsroke events, respectively. Segal won the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.50 before taking the 200 individual medley with a blistering time of 1:53.82. At last season’s OSU Winter Invitational, then-freshmen Jacob Ehrman (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Corey Smith (Lansdale, Pa.) posted a pair of top-10 finishes apiece, while Smith also tacked on an 11th-place finish during the two-day event. Ehrman’s top finish came in the 1650 freestyle, clocking a then-career best time of 16:09.61 to take sixth. The Saline, Mich. product then went on to place eighth in the 500 free at 4:35.85. Meanwhile, Smith took fifth place in the 200 back at 1:51.46 before snagging seventh with a time of 51.19 in the 100 back. The Lansdale, Pa. native was just edged out of the top-10 in the 400 individual medley, taking 11th at 4:10.48.Heading to the Buckeye State to take part of the annual invite this season for the Eagles are a mix of freshmen and veterans. Competition at the OSU Winter Invitational is set to get underway Saturday Feb. 10 at 11 a.m. with preliminary heats, while the finals heat will begin at 5 p.m. …
