SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay began its final tuneup before hosting next week’s CCAA Championship Tournament by playing the first 36 holes of the UC Santa Barbara Collegiate at even par 576 Monday at Sandpiper Golf Club.CSUMB and NCAA Division I bound UC San Diego (580) are the only non–Division I teams in the field. That didn’t stop the Otters from grabbing sole possession of third place entering the final round.Host UCSB leads the event at 8–under 568, including an impressive 12–under 574 in the afternoon round. Weber State is in second, one stroke ahead of CSUMB at 575.Individually, junior Elis Svard (Sodertalje, Sweden) continued his impressive run by carding a 69 in the afternoon round to break 60 for the third time in his last five rounds. He’ll begin play Tuesday tied for eighth at even par 144.Senior Matthew Hedges (Ashland [Ore.] HS) also earned a spot in the top 20 with rounds of 72 and 73 (1–over 145). Junior is in 18th place Brian Whitson (Adnca, Mo./Logan College) after carding matching 73s to factor into the team scoring in both rounds.Senior Edward Hackett (Santa Clara HS) shot 70 in the morning round and freshman Hayata Utsunomiya (Osaka, Japan) added a 71 in the afternoon to close the Otter scoreline.The UCSB Collegiate concludes with 18 holes Tuesday at Sandpiper.
