MIAMI (August 8, 2018) – FIU softball head coach Gator Rebhan announced the hiring of Heather Gelbard as assistant coach on Wednesday, who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Panther coaching staff in 2018-19. Gelbard, who is a Miami native, comes to FIU after previous stops at UMBC (2017-18), Florida Atlantic (2010-16) and Barry (2008-09). “I am so grateful for Gator and FIU’s administration for this amazing opportunity to come back home,” Gelbard said. “It’s a dream come true to be able to coach in my hometown, and an added bonus to reunite with Gator, who has been a mentor to me. I am so excited about the future of this program and eager to contribute to helping FIU softball win a C-USA championship.” The hiring of Gelbard reunites her with Coach Rebhan once again, who she has played under and coached alongside during her softball career. From 2003-11, over 50 former Stingrays played collegiately with 45 of those at Division I programs. “We’re very excited to add a coach of Heather’s caliber to our staff,” Coach Rebhan said. “She knows the area well, as she was born and raised right here in Miami, and she’s had tremendous success at each of her coaching stops.
