FIU Volleyball opens Gator Invitational against Army on Friday morning

FIU returns to the court Friday morning when it begins play at the Gator Invitational. The Panthers (6-3) will face three other teams in the two-day event at the O’Connell Center in Gainesville.FIU opens against Army at 10 a.m. Friday. The Panthers also play Friday night against host No. 11 Florida at 7 p.m. FIU concludes the invitational Saturday afternoon with a match against Jacksonville at 4 p.m.All three matches will have live stats available. FIU defeated the University of Illinois-Chicago to finish last weekend.FIU continues to be among the top defensive teams in Conference USA. The Panthers are third in the league with a .153 opponent hitting percentage and second in opponent kills allowing just 11.06 per set.FIU is fourth in digs with 15.36 per set and fifth in blocks with 2.08 per set. Panthers libero Lina Bernier is second in C-USA with 5.17 digs per set. Chelsea Hudson is the Panthers blocks leader with 31 on the season.FIU is also among the conference offensive leaders. The Panthers average 12.42 assists per set, which is fourth. Abbie Hughes leads FIU in assists with 8.69 per set.The Panthers are also fourth in the conference in kills with 13.47 per set. Margherita Bianchin, who leads FIU, is sixth in C-USA with 3.81 kills per set.
 About ArmyThe Black Knights head to Gainesville with a 3-7 mark on the season. Army has lost five consecutive matches. Army’s last win was Sept. 1 against Southeastern Louisiana, 3-0.Sydney Morriss paces Army averaging 2.55 kills per set.
