SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The first preseason FCS rankings for 2018 are rolling out and the Sacramento State football team is included. The Hornets were ranked 23rd in the Athlon Sports FCS Preview which was released earlier this week.Other national publications will continue to roll out over the summer and the Big Sky Conference coaches and media polls will be announced at the league’s kickoff event in Spokane, Wash., on July 15-16. Sacramento State last opened the season in the top 25 in 2011 when the team was voted 24th. The Hornets started that season with a win over Oregon State and moved up to #12 the following week.Sacramento State finished 2017 with a 7-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark in Big Sky games. The Hornets won their final three contests and five of their final six leading to Jody Sears being named the Co-Big Sky Coach of the Year. The team returns 10 players who earned all-Big Sky Conference honors in 2017, including defensive end George Obinna and safety Mister Harriel who were both named to the first team.The 2018 season begins on Sept. 1 at Hornet Stadium against St. Francis (Ill.). The team will then play at San Diego State, Northern Colorado and Montana before coming back home to face Cal Poly on Oct. 6. In all, Sacramento State will have five home games during the year.
