FULLERTON, Calif. – UC Riverside held a conference opponent to three runs for the first time in nearly a month Friday night, but fell at Cal State Fullerton, 3-2. Sophomore Connor Cannon homered for the third time in five games, giving him a team-leading nine on the year.Cannon put the Highlanders ahead in the top of the second, as his solo homer to right center put UCR up 1-0. He now has a hit in each of his last five conference outings. The Titans struggled to put up runs against freshman pitcher Cole Percival, but managed to eke out the tying run in the bottom of the third on a sac fly RBI. They would go on to take a 3-1 lead with two more runs in the fourth. The freshman duo of Nathan Webb and Dylan Orick would combine to put up the Highlanders’ last run of the day in the fifth. Webb led off with a single, immediately followed by an Orick triple to right, making it 3-2. Orick tallied an RBI for the second straight game.UCR would record three more hits the rest of the way. A pair of singles from Colby Schultz and Yeager Taylor would put Schultz on second with two outs in the top of the sixth. What proved to be the Highlanders’ best chance at finding the tying run would come short though, as Fullerton would pick up outs on the next two at bats to escape the inning.Webb and Schultz both finished 2-for-4 as the Highlanders’ only players with more than one hit on the night. The action will resume with the second game of the weekend Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
