International Peace Day Soccer Event, Sept. 26, on the Germantown Campus

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the three campus celebration of International Peace Day which is observed all over the world in September. Ten years ago, the three campus Peace and Justice Studies Community asked the campuses to have pick-up games of soccer, a very universal sport, to celebrate International Peace Day. Such an event occurred on the Germantown Campus. The first year that Dr. Rai was the Provost on the Germantown Campus, he played goalie! As he surveyed the diversity of players on the field, he remarked at the end of the pick-up games, “This is what Montgomery College is all about.” Last year, students from 62 countries played for 20 min. periods. Also in terms of this event, funds from the faculty were given to the Montgomery College Foundation in honor of Phil McClean, deceased in 2007, who taught Math on the Germantown Campus. These funds helped establish International Peace Day pick-up soccer games. This year the event on the Germantown Campus is Sept. 26 with a rain date of Oct. 3…both being Wednesdays. The time is noon to 4 p.m. (near the Baseball Field). Short introductory speeches, around 1 or 1:15, will be given by Dr. Rai, Provost Margaret Latimer, and Professors Darren Smith and Benedict Ngala. I have also invited Dr. Cain. Two years ago, we were honored by Dr. Pollard’s presence. Our professional referee, Michael Greenwood, will be there from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Mr. Greenwood has been with us for eight of our ten years. He is outstanding. The Germantown Provost, Dr. Rai, the Dean of Students, Student Life and one other dept. of the Germantown Campus as well the the 3 Campus Peace and Justice Studies Community help us with expenses like pizza and Pepsi and water and ice drinks, soccer balls, professional signs and referee fees.
