William & Mary junior Abby Jones (Woodbury, Conn.) finished up her outstanding season on Friday at the NCAA Eastern Preliminaries, tying for 42nd overall in the semifinals of the high jump.  This was her first NCAA appearance, and she cleared the opening height of 1.64m (5-4.5) on her second attempt before coming up just shy after three solid attempts at 1.69m (5-6.5).  That allowed Jones to improve three places over her pre-meet seed, and kept the Tribe’s streak at this championship of improving seed a perfect 4-for-4.  It eventually would take 1.79m (5-10.5), better than W&M’s school record, to advance to the NCAA Finals.  Jones’ season comes to end after setting a lifetime-best of 1.73m (5-8) to win the Colonial Athletic Association title at the beginning of the month, the first for W&M since 2002.The NCAA Eastern Preliminaries come to a close on Saturday night, when junior Regan Rome (Dallas, Pa.) races in the 5,000m at 8:45 p.m.  Rome is already qualified in the 10,000m, after finishing third in the longer distance on Thursday night.Print Friendly Version
