Lazaro Ends the Season as an ITA All-American

MIAMI (May, 29 2018) – FIU Senior Andrea Lazaro earned ITA All-American honors for the first time in the FIU tennis program after reaching the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship quarterfinals in the individual draw. “Andrea beat every FIU record and it is very important for our program to have an ITA All-American” FIU Women’s tennis head coach Katarina Petrovic said. “It is all about the dedication and hard work. Whatever we do on the courts shows our success and that we want to finish in the top of the country every year.”Lazaro tallied a team-best 30-5 singles mark in her 2017-18 campaign, finishing the season ranked No. 13 in the country. She notched a 15-2 record in dual matches at No. 1, with 14 of the victories in straight set. The native from Barcelona, Spain set school records during her career at FIU. Last week, she reached the NCAA Singles quarterfinals after beating No. 3 Estela-Perez Sorriba of Miami, 6-1, 5-7, 6-0. In the round of 16 she downed Duke’s Meible Chi 6-3, 6-3 and beat Stanford’s Melissa Lord in the first round 6-4, 6-1. Lazaro won every singles match in the Conference USA Championship and helped the team win the first C-USA Championship title (4/22). During the season, she reached the No. 2 position in the Oracle/ITA national singles rankings for highest ranking in school history by an individual. Lazaro won the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championship and advanced to the semifinals in the 2017 Riviera ITA All American Championship. She was also recognized as the Most Outstanding Singles Player of the C-USA Championship and earned First team Conference USA honors in both singles and doubles. She was the first FIU Panther to become Conference Player of the Year in the 2016-17 season. Academically Lazaro was named to the 2016-17 and 2017-18 Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and earned 2018 C-USA Commissioner Academic Medal.Fans are encouraged …
