Lone Star College-Montgomery’s “Healthier U” Wellness Event Raises $24,500 for Scholarships

Published on: April 27, 2012 After 15 years, the heart of Lone Star College-Montgomerys Healthier U Wellness Expo and Job Fair is still beating strong, having raised more than $24,500 for student scholarships this month at the annual event. Were grateful for our generous sponsors and the many participants who were able to make this years event a huge success, said Mary Rush, division operations manager and Healthier U coordinator. Because of their support, many students in health-related and other programs will have the opportunity to continue their education. Healthier U raises scholarship funds that benefit students primarily in the colleges nursing, medical radiologic technology, physical therapist assistant, fire science technology, and emergency medical services programs.  The event, which took place April 10-14, included a wellness expo with 27 businesses and organizations showing demonstrations and providing health-related information. There were also 12 employers searching for candidates at the job fair.Healthier U also included a heart-healthy cook-off and bake-off, a multimedia sale, a silent auction, a golf tournament, a blood drive sponsored by the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, and a 5K fun run. The proceeds generated over the past 15 years have allowed the organization to fund four $1,000 endowed scholarship that will be awarded to students in perpetuity. This is in addition to the approximately 25 to 35 $500 scholarships awarded to students each year.
