GARY — WGU Indiana Chancellor Dr. Allison Barber today welcomed Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson of Gary to serve on the university’s advisory board. The board, which features leaders from the government, business, and academic sectors, advises WGU Indiana on how best to assist Hoosiers in achieving their dream of a college education.

“Mayor Freeman-Wilson has been a tremendous resource for WGU in Northwest Indiana and a strong advocate for higher education in our state,” said Barber. “WGU Indiana credits our mayors and local officials for strengthening the workforces in their cities and connecting their citizens to new opportunities.”

The WGU Indiana Advisory Board is comprised of eight Indiana leaders who provide guidance to the university in strategic planning and in the implementation of its programs.

Current Advisory Board Members are:
Dr. Vincent Bertram, CEO, Project Lead the Way
Kathy Davis, Owner, Davis Design Group and former Lt. Governor of Indiana
Gerry Dick, President, Grow Indiana Media Ventures
Dr. Sue Ellspermann, President, Ivy Tech Community College and former Lt. Governor of Indiana
Mike Langellier, President and CEO, TechPoint
Jamie Merisotis, President, Lumina Foundation for Education
Ron Stiver, President of Clinical Services, IU Health

“To enact real change in our communities it is vital for all people to have affordable access to higher education,” said Mayor Freeman-Wilson. “WGU Indiana provides an avenue to a college degree for the residents of Gary and so many other communities in Indiana. I’m proud to advise the university in this capacity and to join so many accomplished leaders in doing so.”

Before her election as Mayor of Gary in 2011, Karen Freeman-Wilson served as a judge on the Gary City Court and later as Attorney General for the State of Indiana. She attained her undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard University.
