Men’s Tennis Splits Doubleheader; Sweeps Arizona Christian 7-0

Riverside, Calif.- The UC Riverside Men’s Tennis Team (16-16) split a Sunday doubleheader at home falling 7-0 in a conference match with UC Santa Barbara and then bouncing back to earn a 7-0 sweep over Arizona Christian.UCSB
The Gauchos had a strong start taking the doubles round with wins on courts two and three and followed with six singles matches to seal the competition 7-0.Sophomore Gilbert Chung had a battle on court five with Joseph Rotheram as he dropped the 1st set 3-6, but forced a tiebreaker with a 7-5 win in the 2nd. Chung fought hard scoring six in the tiebreaker, but fell in the overall match 3-6, 7-5, 6-10.Junior Kyle McCann had a strong start on court two holding set point in the 1st, but fell 5-7, 1-6 to Simon Freund.The Highlanders looked to regroup getting right back on the courts for the 2nd match of the doubleheader.ARIZONA CHRISTIAN
The Highlanders bounced back in the 2nd match of the day dominating Arizona Christian 7-0 as they won the doubles points and all six singles matches to sweep the competition. In singles play UCR was nearly perfect winning 12 of the 14 sets played.The duo of Pawel Jankowiak and Anderson Ju clinched the first doubles match with a 6-2 win on court three and the team of Benjamin Kilchherr and Nabil Abdallah sealed a 1-0 lead for the Highlanders with a 7-6 win on court one.In singles play Jankowiak, Abdallah, Chung, and Vignesh Subramanyan all won in straight sets sweeps. Subramanyan recorded an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win on court five and Abdallah nearly matched his teammate winning 6-1, 6-0 on court four.UCR will now prepare for a Big West matchup with Hawaii this Thursday in the final home match for the Highlanders.
