LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Sacramento State women’s golf team started its spring season on Monday at The Gold Rush at El Dorado GC. The Hornets are tied for fourth place at 23-over (302-297-599) along with Long Beach State and UC Irvine. The three teams are trailing Georgia (+15), Colorado State (+16) and BYU (+17) heading into the final round on Tuesday.

Nishtha Madan is tied for third place in the individual standings after shooting 73-72-145. Madan was extremely steady in the first round as she parred her first nine holes before a birdie on the par-4 first. From there, she had two bogeys over the next eight holes to end at 1-over. In the second round, Madan started slowly with a bogey and double bogey during her first three holes. She stormed back with birdies on the on the par-4 13th, par-5 18th, par-4 first and par-5 fifth to take her to 1-under. A bogey on the par-4 eighth returned her to even par

Freshman Corinne Viden is tied for 11th and tied for the team lead in the second round. Viden totaled 77 in the morning and followed with a 1-under par round of 71. She opened play with a birdie on the par-5 seventh but added four birdies and a double bogey during the day. Viden had five birdies, five bogeys and eight pars in the second round to finish even. She had a birdie on the par-5 seventh to start her second round and was 4-under with three consecutive birdies over Nos. 12-14. Four bogeys over five holes (Nos. 17-3) brought her back to even before she birdied the par-5 fourth and bogeyed the par-4 sixth.

Sofie Babic is tied for 36th at 77-76-153. Babic had one birdie and six birdies in the first round. Her second round was comprised of a birdie on the par-4 14th as well as three bogeys and a double bogey.

Julia Becker and Astha Madan each totaled 154 to and are tied for 47th with one round to play. Becker did not have a birdie in the first round and was 5-over with five bogeys. Becker was 6-over during her second round with six bogeys before she ended the day with a birdie on the par-5 seventh — her final hole of the day.

Madan began the day with a double bogey on the 10th hole and could not get back to even during the day. She played her final 17 holes of the first round at 1-over par with birdies on the par-4 16th and par-3 17th along with three bogeys. In the second round, the senior had three bogeys and two double bogeys to finish at 79.

The third round will not begin until 12:45 on Tuesday with a shotgun start. Sacramento State will be paired with Cal Poly and UC Irvine during the day.
