That kind of intensity will likely play a big role in the level of success Washington will see as it faces its final stretch of a grueling Pac-12 schedule.The first hurdle for the Huskies (21-4, 11-4 Pac-12) was a home matchup against yet another AVCA ranked opponent, No. 25 Arizona. The Huskies came away with the sweep over Arizona to remain tied with UCLA atop the Pac-12 standings.“Pleased with improvement,” head coach Keegan Cook said. “Any time you can see that especially over the course of a match and over the course of the season. Improvement is something we really value a lot.”
The Wildcats (16-11, 8-7 Pac-12) put the first point on the board before junior Courtney Schwan dropped one for the first Washington kill of the night. Arizona put up two straight points, then junior Bailey Tanner set junior Crissy Jones to bounce a kill of a Wildcat defender. Jones earned another kill, bringing the early score to 3-4.Freshman Kara Bajema came up with her first block of the night at the net, then hit a line drive across the court for a kill to tie the set at five. Arizona rattled off a 1-5 run to take a four point lead and prompt a UW timeout.Bajema claimed another block out of the timeout, and Tanner came up with a creative kill by the net to make it 8-11. Arizona maintained an early lead with an efficient offensive attack, extending to 11-17 before another timeout by Cook and the Huskies.The Washington offense gained some traction to go on a 5-1 run to pull back within two.
