O’Sullivan Scores Twice as Field Hockey Falls to Nationally-Ranked MIT

WORCESTER – Senior Emily Penn (Columbia, MD) led No. 15 MIT with a hat-trick in a 6-2 victory over host WPI Saturday afternoon in a NEWMAC Field Hockey matchup in Alumni Stadium.
The visiting Engineers improve to 11-2 and 4-1 while the Crimson and Gray dip to 8-3 and 3-2.
Freshman Amanda Garofalo (Fairfield, NJ) dented the scoreboard just 1:29 into the game. Sophomore Rayna Higuchi (Solana Beach, CA) followed at 3:37 and Penn notched her first at 11:12. Sophomore Devon Goetz (Rockville, MD) sent a pass to Garofalo while the other two goals were unassisted. Freshman Abby O’Sullivan (Walpole, MA) put the hosts on the board with an unassisted marker at 18:25.
Penn added a second at 44:22 and the third at 50:59 to sandwich a second goal by O’Sullivan at 47:55. With 11:03 remaining, Junior Bailey Tregoning’s (Frederick, MD) shot went to the lower left of the cage for the 6-2 final.
Junior Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, ME) stopped a season-best 17 shots before yielding to sophomore Emily Wilson (Malvern, PA), who made one save in relief. Mushrall now has 42 saves versus MIT in the past two games, including a career-high 25 last season. Senior Abby King (Fairfield, ME) chipped in with a defensive save. Rookie goalkeeper Grace Moore (Boston, MA), meanwhile, halted four shots for MIT.
Cambridge’s Engineers outshot Worcester’s Engineers 29-8 and were awarded nine of 11 penalty corners.
Both teams host NEWMAC contests Tuesday with WPI and Smith starting at 7pm, and MIT and Wellesley beginning at 6pm.
