Reeves, Coaches Named Top Staff In The West

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Cal Poly Pomona head men’s soccer coach Adam Reeves and his assistant coaches, Bob Ammann, Jose Ortega and Cruz Hernandez, have been named the 2018 NCAA Division II West Region Coaching Staff of the Year, it was announced Friday morning.Reeves and his assistants piloted the Broncos through another incredible season that saw the team capture its third NCAA Division II West Region title in the last four years and an appearance in the NCAA Final Four also for the third time in four seasons. After a slow start that saw the team go 2-4, the Broncos turned things around, winning 15 of their last 17 contests entering Thursday’s NCAA semifinal match against West Chester, which ended in a 2-1 overtime loss. Ever since their 3-0 loss to Cal State San Bernardino to open conference play on Sept. 19, the Broncos ended the year going 15-3-0, registering nine shutouts and outscoring their opponents 32-14 on goals from 13 different players.In the first four matches of the NCAA Tournament alone, CPP had not only upset nationally-ranked opponents as an unranked team itself, but the Broncos shutout Fresno Pacific, No. 4 Simon Fraser, No. 13 West Texas A&M and No. 7 Azusa Pacific, the second-, third-, fifth- and 13th-ranked scoring offenses in all of Division II to make a return trip to the National Semifinals.  However, the loss to No. 23 West Chester on Thursday ended the season with an overall record of 17-7-0, two wins shy of a National Championship.This is the second straight regional Coaching Staff of the Year award for Reeves and his assistants; they also earned the distinction last season after leading the Broncos to a West Region title and a return trip to the Final Four.The Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award is voted on by other coaches in the region, who are also members …
