ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State football team aims to start a winning streak as it travels to face The University of Texas of the Permian Basin Saturday at 4 p.m. PT.The Lumberjacks will be making their second trip of the season to the Lone Star State and are hoping for a better result in their second meeting with a Texas team. HSU lost to MSU Texas 55-12 in its first game of the season.Head Coach Damaro Wheeler and his team are fresh off a win over Simon Fraser in front of a supportive home crowd. HSU had its most complete performance to date with outstanding efforts in all three phases of the game. “It was a great feeling (on Saturday) being able to sing the fight song with the men and all of the congratulations,” said Wheeler. “We accomplished what we set out to do.”The Green and Gold took a 16-0 lead in the first quarter and weathered a late rally by the Clan to hold on to a Homecoming victory, 23-16. Linebacker Demetrick Watts was tabbed the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the win, which included a fumble recovery for a touchdown.Permian Basin is 1-5 this season with a 1-1 record in front of its home crowd. The Falcons are hosting the North Coast squad for their Homecoming game, and they are looking for a return to the win column after a 21-point loss to West Texas A&M.”They seem pretty fast offensively, they have some receivers and running backs that can run,” said Wheeler. “They will try and take some shots and out-athlete us.
