CARBONDALE, Ill. — As a new school year begins, Southern Illinois University Carbondale will roll out the welcome mat in grand Saluki style for new and returning students. A wide variety of special activities are planned during Saluki Startup and Weeks of Welcome.
Fall semester classes officially begin on August 20 but the fun traditions, old and new, start even sooner and go on for several weeks. The events are all about helping students get acquainted, engaged, connected and prepared for success.
New for 2018 is Light up the Lake
Campus Lake is a long-time favorite spot for the SIU community and the new Light up the Lake event, slated for 7-10 p.m., Aug. 16, will showcase the new Becker Pavilion along with the boat docks and rejuvenated lake. It’s a campus-wide celebration featuring hole-in-one Frisbee golf, a slack line, climbing wall, glow volleyball, a disc golf tournament, a competition inflatable game, a DJ, henna tattoos, lots of glow-in-the-dark freebies and free boat rentals.
Students can grab some of the cool props on hand and pose for a picture in the unique photo booth. They’ll also enjoy lemonade, popcorn, snow cones, ice cream, s’mores, and other refreshments at no cost. And, they can get a free reusable water bottle and keep it full at a new portable water bottle refill station created by campus personnel with repurposed items. The station will be at several outdoor events this fall.
