Softball Rebounds with Saturday Sweep of Toros

CARSON, Calif. – Following a difficult start to the California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule with a pair of Friday losses to Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday afternoon, Humboldt State softball rebounded with a Saturday sweep of the Toros.The Lumberjacks won the first game 4-2 and scored eight runs in the top of the seventh to defeat the home team 13-9 in the series finale. HSU improved to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.Freshman starter Lexee Sheiring got early run support in game one. Winona Vigil drove a two-run single up the middle in the first inning and Kelly Sonnemann supplied a sacrifice fly in the fourth to put HSU ahead 3-0.Rachael Sandoval hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to end Sheiring’s shutout, and HSU newcomer Rylie Carlier belted her first bomb of the season to give the visitors breathing room, 4-1, in the sixth frame.Dominguez Hills added another run in the sixth as Sheiring closed out her complete game performance scattering eight hits and surrendering just two earned runs. The Lincoln, Calif., product improved to 2-1 overall.HSU trailed 9-5 entering the seventh inning of Saturday’s series finale, but the Jacks recorded seven hits and scored eight runs to pull off the win.Third baseman Rachel Barker showed off her bat going 4-for-4 at the dish in the late victory. Barker drove in a team-high four runs and swatted her first roundtripper of the season.Hanna Holland, Illa Haley, Danica Grier and Vigil each recorded multi-hit outings in the 13-9 win.Rachel Bennett got the start in the last game of the four-game series, but did not get the decision.
