Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Nov. 13: Sam Merriman and Danielle Kulpins

Case Western Reserve University senior Sam Merriman, a runner on the men’s cross country team, and senior Danielle Kulpins, a runner on the women’s cross country team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.Merriman earned All-Region honors for the third-straight year at the 2017 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships in Powell, Ohio on Saturday.  Merriman placed fourth out of 242 finishers in the 8K race, crossing the finish line in a time of 25:22.1 to claim the all-region award.  He helped lead the Spartans to a seventh-place finish out of 36 teams competing at the meet.  By virtue of his finish, he qualified for next weekend’s NCAA Division III Championships in Elsah, Illinois.Kulpins earned All-Region honors for the second-consecutive year at the 2017 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships in Powell, Ohio on Saturday.  Kulpins was the team’s top finisher, placing 17th out of 247 finishers in the 6K race with a time of 22:57.2.  She helped lead the Spartans to an eighth-place finish out of 35 competing teams at the meet.The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.Honorable Mention: Justin Phan (football) led the 14th-ranked Spartans to a thrilling 41-34 win over Carnegie Mellon University in Saturday’s Academic Bowl, making a number of …
