Spartans Fall to Ohio Northern in NCAA Regional Opener

The second-seeded Case Western Reserve University Spartans fell to third-seeded Ohio Northern University Polar Bears 1-0 in their opening game of the 2018 NCAA Division III Regional Championships at Purcell Field in Notre Dame, Indiana.
The setback puts the Spartans one loss away from elimination, as the team dropped to 31-9 overall for the season. Case Western Reserve will attempt to avoid elimination when it takes on fourth-seeded Mount Aloysius College at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 12th.

The opening game of the regional round in Notre Dame, Indiana was a pitcher’s duel, as both teams were held scoreless until the top of the third inning when ONU put the first run on the board. Alicia Swierz delivered an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Miranda Huddle.
The Spartans would get the potential game-tying run on base in the fifth inning, but ultimately, would be unable to plate the equalizer.
Sophomore Ilissa Hamilton took the loss on the mound for the Spartans, as she fell to 14-5 on the season. Kristen Lightel earned the win for the Polar Bears, improving to 19-3 for the year.
At the plate for CWRU, freshman Arisa Cleaveland went two-for-three with a double, while senior Katie Wede, junior Nicole Doyle, freshman Sarah Miller and Hamilton each recorded a hit.
With the win, Ohio Northern improved 31-9 on the year, and will advance to face top-seeded and 19th-ranked Saint Mary’s College (Ind.) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
