Spartans’ Winning Streak Ends with 90-71 Loss at Rochester

The Case Western Reserve University men’s basketball team saw its four-game winning come to an end with a 90-71 setback at the University of Rochester on Friday night.The loss dropped the Spartans to 1-1 in University Athletic Association play and to 7-6 overall, while Rochester raised its season ledger to 10-3 overall with a 1-1 league mark.Both of the Spartans’ leading scorers did all of their damage in the second half, with sophomore forward Connor Nally scoring 12 points on three-of-six shooting from long range, and freshman guard William FitzPatrick adding a career-high 11 points on a five-of-eight shooting effort over eight minutes of action.  Senior forward T.J. Duckett scored eight points and collected a team-high nine rebounds. The Yellowjackets led throughout the entire first half, but the Spartans battled to keep it close throughout the opening 20 minutes.  After a dunk by Duckett with 16:26 to play made the score 9-7 Rochester, the Yellowjackets went on an 8-0 run to take a 17-7 lead.  However, a quick 9-2 CWRU run, keyed by five points from sophomore forward Michael Hollis, pulled the Spartans back within three, 19-16.  Rochester continued to lead, with back-to-back threes from freshman guard Antonio Ionadi cutting the advantage to two points, 26-24, with 6:22 to go.  However, the Yellowjackets closed the opening frame on a 17-5 run to take a 43-29 advantage into halftime.Ionadi’s nine points led the Spartans during the first half, with Hollis adding seven points and five rebounds.Rochester built its lead to 23 with 13:12 left in the period, before a quick 5-0 run by CWRU cut it back to 18 points with 11:53 remaining.  However, a 14-4 run by the Yellowjackets extended their advantage to a game-high 28 points with 7:42 remaining, and CWRU would be unable to get the score closer than 19 points for the remainder of the game, despite the strong finish to the contest …
