WORCESTER – WPI junior Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) has garnered the department’s first Academic All-America, as selected by CoSIDA, for the 2017-18 year.
The second team honoree is the first volleyball student-athlete to be recognized since Stacey Cotton (first team) in 1989. It is the fourth time a WPI volleyball player has been chosen as Cotton (third team), and Kathleen Murray (second team), were lauded in 1988.
The mechanical engineering major finished fourth in the conference with 876 assists. The repeat NEWMAC All-Academic honoree has been previously honored as a Charles O. Thompson Scholar, member of the Dean’s List and as a Presidential Merit Scholar. Outside of the classroom and off the court, Bakhtyari is a member of Alpha Phi, Society of Women Engineers, Promotion of Animal Welfare Society, and Habitat for Humanity.
In all, Bakhtyari totals 1,703 assists, 703 digs and 94 service aces in her first three years on Boynton Hill.
