Looking for an excuse to let loose? Head over to the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston tonight from 5 to 10 pm, when the museum hosts its monthly First Friday. The theme of tonight’s event in the series is Island Breeze, a celebration of the art and culture of the Caribbean. Admission is 21+ only.
For the fourth year in a row, the museum is partnering with Boston Caribbean Fashion Week to kick off summer on the waterfront and to celebrate Caribbean-American Heritage Month.
Island Breeze will include fashion on display, a chance to tour the museum’s permanent and special exhibitions, stunning harbor views, and specialty cocktails. Factor in the musical talents of DJ Mikey D and Riddim Symphony, a Boston-based Soca/Reggae/Calypso band founded by Berklee students, and you’ve got the prescription for an enjoyable summer evening. The current special exhibitions showcase the work of artists Kevin Beasley and Caitlin Keogh. The Beasley exhibition features sculptures that combine sound and clothing embedded with microphones and musical equipment. In a different vein, Keogh’s paintings explore issues of gender and femininity through large, vivid canvases whose crisp lines and bold colors are imbued with the language of illustration.
ICA First Fridays are very popular and often sell out, so it’s best to purchase tickets in advance online, if you want to enjoy this night of drinks, dancing, fashion, and fun.
The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston’s First Friday: Island Breeze is tonight, Friday, June 1, from 5 to 10 pm, at the ICA, 25 Harbor Shore Dr., in Boston’s Seaport District. The event is 21+ only and IDs are checked. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door; purchase tickets here. Find directions here.
