Two Parking Lots to Re-Open Aug. 11 After Completion of Pipeline Project

Parking Lots B and P, which have been closed since mid-June for the installation of a natural gas pipeline, will re-open on Saturday, Aug. 11.
The two-month closure allowed contractor crews to remove asphalt and dig several feet to install a 10-inch diameter pipe from the Student Housing Replacement Project site to a Southern California Gas Co. line at Temple Avenue and South Campus Drive.
The Department of Facilities Planning, Design & Construction coordinated the pipeline installation as part of the housing and dining complex construction project. In the process, the natural gas pipeline infrastructure on campus also was upgraded.
The pipeline project was completed before Cal Poly Pomona’s first academic year under the semester system, which starts on Aug 23. Students living on campus will begin moving into the Residential Suites near the lots on Aug. 19.
The pipeline construction was planned during the summer, when the student population takes a precipitous drop and the impact of projects on the campus community is minimized.
The first phase of the $185-million Student Housing Replacement Project consists of two eight-story mid-rise towers containing 980 beds and encompassing 280,000 square feet. A dining commons facility that can accommodate 680 students at a time also is part of the housing complex.
