Webb’s Homer Puts UCR Ahead Late, Highlanders Defeat Titans 4-2


FULLERTON, Calif. – UC Riverside ended Cal State Fullerton’s eight-game win streak Sunday afternoon, defeating the Titans 4-2 in the final game of the weekend.Nathan Webb’s solo home run in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie, putting the Highlanders (18-28, 6-12) ahead for good. Ari Gerber would add an insurance run in the top of the eighth, scoring on a sac fly by Matt Hardy. Both Webb’s homer and Gerber’s run were the second of their respective freshman seasons.Right-handed pitcher Trenton Toplikar (5-3) finished with six strikeouts in just under eight innings pitched. Junior lefty Hazahel Quijada closed things out over the final one-and-a-third inning to notch his fourth save of the year, tied for sixth-most in the Big West.The Highlanders ended Fullerton’s (27-21, 14-4) eight-game win streak, with the two Titan runs going down as the fewest allowed by UCR since a 9-2 win over Hawaii on Apr. 14.Both of Fullerton’s runs came in the bottom of the first on a two-run triple from Sahid Valenzuela. In the following inning, freshman Dylan Orick would cut the deficit in half with his fifth run in five games, scoring on a Cole Pofek double to center field.UCR would remain a run down until the fifth inning. Pofek led off with a double to left center. Despite that being the Highlanders’ only hit of the inning, he would go on to award Colby Schultz an RBI on a groundout to first base, tying things at 2-2.Webb would put the Highlanders in front with two outs and no runners on in the top of the seventh. With the solo home run being his only hit of the day, he has now accumulated 18 extra-base hits on 38 total hits this year.As a team, the Highlanders doubled Fullerton in hits, 6-3.
