W&M Field Hockey Associate HC Mark Egner Named to Team USA U17 National Team Staff

William & Mary field hockey associate head coach Mark Egner was named to the USA Field Hockey national staff this week, as an assistant coach with the U17 Junior National Team.  Egner will coach alongside head coach Daan Polders, a former assistant coach at Michigan State and Wake Forest and most recently head coach at the Villa Maria Academy in Pennsylvania, and assistant coach Katie Bam, a two-time U.S. Olympian and currently an assistant coach at Maryland.Egner has been an assistant coach with the Tribe for the last three seasons, and was promoted to associate head coach this spring.  Over the last four years, W&M has steadily improved, and in 2017, went 13-7 and reached the CAA Championship game for the first time since 2002.  W&M also spent most of the season ranked in the NFHCA Top-25, and finished the year at No. 19 in the nation.  Egner helped the Tribe defense improve both its goals-allowed and save percentage each of the past three years, and helped coach Erin Menges ’18 to back-to-back CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors.Egner is no stranger to the USA Field Hockey Junior High Performance program, working for the last several years as a coach, site director, and selector for the Futures program in the state of Virginia.  That includes working with several levels of athletes in the high school and collegiate ranks, identifying and training athletes who are the path to joining Team USA squads.  He also helped coach the U19 Junior National Team on a tour of Germany in the spring of 2016, and has coached at the Young Women’s National Championships each of the past two summers.  In March of 2018, he again traveled with the U19 team on a competition tour of Ireland.The U.S. U17 team identifies and works with athletes at the start of their national careers, with …
