Women’s Basketball Heads to Washington for West Region Crossover Classic

ARCATA, Calif. – Looking to build on two exhibition wins, the Humboldt State women’s basketball team will open regular season play in Bellingham, Wash., with the West Region Crossover Classic. The tournament weekend will begin with a 7:30 p.m game on Friday, Nov. 9, against host Western Washington, followed by a game at 5 p.m. on Saturday versus Seattle Pacific.”It’s a tournament we are familiar with, with Western Washington, Seattle Pacific and Fresno Pacific,” said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. “We only play Western Washington and Seattle Pacific, and they are two traditionally very strong programs. It’s definitely a great challenge to open the regular season with such competitive teams.” Lumberjack Arena erupted as Humboldt State defeated Bethesda University in last week’s triple-digit exhibition win. The Jacks won 109-40 and followed the lopsided victory with a 76-61 win versus Southern Oregon later in the week.Western Washington is coming off a 89-55 win over Trinity Western on Oct. 22. The Vikings have yet to go on the road and get to play at home as they welcome four teams to compete in the Classic. Western Washington went 12-16 overall last season, but defeated the Jacks in a close one, 54-50, in their second game.Facing the Jacks on Saturday, Seattle Pacific dropped its first exhibition game 75-74 to George Fox University. The Falcons continued their extraordinary success in recent years with a 23-8 mark last season. which landed them in the NCAA Tournament before falling to UC San Diego in the first round 64-51. HSU lost last season’s meeting with the Falcons, the Jacks’ regular season opener, 69-49.”We are very familiar with both teams and have played them the past two years,” said Coach Bento-Jackson, “We definitely know we have our hands full.”
