RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The UC Riverside Women’s Basketball team got valuable experience in Thursday’s game vs. Long Beach State, but ultimately couldn’t pick up its first Big West Conference win, taking a 63-45 loss.The team (6-10, 0-2) had an off shooting night, however it went into halftime down 29-24. In the first half, the team was led by Keilanei Cooper and Malou De Kergret, who each scored seven points.LBSU took charge from the tip-off, leading for 34:34 of the game. While the two teams combined to score just nine points through the first half of the first quarter, Long Beach State came away with a 16-10 lead.The second quarter marked the only quarter the Highlanders outscored the Beach. The team’s defense held LBSU to 2-for-15 shooting and it shot 35.3 percent from the field. De Kergret and Cooper each had five points.While UCR has made a concerted effort over the last few games to find ways of getting to the free throw line more, the team went just 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.The Highlanders came out cold in the third quarter and were unable to get in an offensive rhythm. The team shot 21.4 percent from the field and scored eight points in the quarter to fall behind 44-32.Unfortunately that lead increased to begin the fourth quarter with LBSU jumping out to a 15-point lead. However, Cooper cut the lead to 10 points after back-to-back baskets. She led the team in scoring, going 6-for-15 from the field with 13 points.Fighting to get the lead down to single digits for the majority of the second half, 10 points is as close as the team would come in the fourth quarter.The team’s achilles heel the entire night was turnovers. Long Beach State managed to score 26 points off turnovers, while UCR tallied 13 points off of turnovers. …
