WOMEN’S GOLF ADDS TRANSFER SYDNEY SMITH TO THE ROSTER

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Former Nevada state champion Sydney Smith has transferred to the Sacramento State women’s golf team, it was announced today by head coach David Sutherland. Smith, who competed for Colorado State in the fall, will continue her freshman season for the Hornets this spring and will be immediately eligible.Smith played in three events with Colorado State where she averaged 76.78 in nine rounds. She shot 73-77-77-227 at the Coeur d’Alene Collegiate for her lowest 54-hole total as well as her lowest round. She added a 74 in the second round of the Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate.”Sydney is someone I recruited out of high school and saw her play a lot,” Sutherland said. “She’s a player that won frequently and likes to win. She’s a very good ball striker and was dominant in Nevada junior golf. I think she will fit in well with the program.”Smith won the regional and state championship in 2015 and added a second state title in 2017. She shot 65 to set the girls school record at Faith Lutheran HS in Las Vegas and recorded a 9-hole score of 30 to set the low for both boys and girls at the school. Smith was a member of the varsity team all four years where she was named all-state, all-region and all-city each season.This past summer, she paired with Annic Hackiewicz to win the stroke play portion U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship in Tarzana, Calif. The pair shot 66 in the first round and followed with a 68 to win the event by two strokes. The year before, they advanced to the quarterfinals of the event in match play.Sacramento State will start the spring portion of its schedule on Monday, Feb. 25, at The Gold Rush. The event will be hosted by Long Beach State and held at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, Calif.
