SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State women’s golf team will start its season on Saturday at the Mary Fossum Invitational in one of the toughest fields the program has been a part of. The 16-team tournament will feature 13 schools which ended last season ranked among the top 100, including five in the top 50.

The tournament will feature 36 holes on Saturday beginning at 6:30 a.m. PT and 18 holes on Sunday (7 a.m.) at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.

The Hornets finished 2017-18 with a tremendous run which saw the team win three consecutive tournaments before placing second at the Big Sky Championships. Despite being ranked 56th, Sacramento State was left out of the NCAA postseason. The team recorded seven of the best 11 54-hole scores in school history and also produced nine of the best 12 team rounds all-time at Sacramento State.

Individually, Astha Madan set the school single-season record by averaged 73.97 in 30 rounds. Sofie Babic averaged 74.03 to place second while Julia Becker (74.13, third), Nishtha Madan (74.20, fourth) and Corinne Viden (74.70, sixth) all placed their names in the top 10. Astha Madan, who was a senior, is the only member of last year’s team to not return. Her spot in the lineup will go to senior Katie Dunaway.
