OGDEN, Utah — The Sacramento State women’s soccer team was picked fifth in the preseason Big Sky Coaches’ Poll released on Monday.
Sacramento State received 50 points in the poll, finishing just one point behind fourth-place Northern Arizona (51). They are seven points ahead of the sixth-place program, Portland State (43).
Defending regular season Big Sky champion Eastern Washington was picked to repeat by the conference’s coaches, garnering 78 points and eight first place votes. Northern Colorado just edged Montana for the number two spot, totaling 69 points and one first place vote. Montana, who also received one first place vote, collected 66 points.
The top six teams in the regular season qualify for the Big Sky Tournament. The Hornets earned the No. 6 seed for the 2017 tournament with a 3-3-4 Big Sky record. The team has an exciting opportunity to advance to the postseason for the fourth consecutive season for the first time in program history.
The Hornets return to action with one of their youngest teams yet, rostering just seven upperclassmen, including two seniors. However, of the 11 returning sophomores, three were full time starters last season while four more saw significant playing time.
Among the returners are three all-Big Sky selections, including first team selection and the 2017 Newcomer of the Year, Kylee Kim-Bustillos. Kim-Bustillos led the team and ranked second in the Big Sky with 11 goals and 26 points.
